Day 15: Hamburg

We had a bit of a slow start to the day today - we were all a bit tired out from yesterday's busy day! It gave us a chance to get some organizational work done and a chance for the boys to get some school work done. We headed into downtown Hamburg and walked around a bit. We walked from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to the Rathaus (town hall), passing multiple Christmas markets being set up along the way. The town hall is built to look older than it actually is - it was finished in 1897, after having been burned in a fire in 1842. We walked on to take a look at the two lakes in the center of Hamburg - the Binnen Alster (the smalled of the two) and the Außen Alster. These lakes were formed by damming up a section of the Alster River.

We spent a little more time in the city center shopping area before heading over to the Landungsbrücke, where we ate dinner at a great Italian restaurant - Luigi's. Then we went down to the riverside to catch our ferry shuttle across the Elbe to the Stage Theater.

There is only one show playing at the Stage Theater - it has been running for years and is usually sold out. As soon as the show started, it was clear to us why it was so popular. What an amazing production, not to mention a super show! We all loved it! The boys said it was the highlight of the trip so far for them - imagine how much they would have enjoyed it if they could have understood all of the German! What a fantastic experience to be able to share as a family!
Although we followed the rules and refrained from taking pictures, a quick web search shows that not everybody did. Here is a pic from Hamburg's city travel office at Hamburg.de.
