Day 9 Berlin

We had a much needed slow morning. We slept in, Ate rolls and pastries from the local bakery and headed to the Berlin Zoo. It was cold and damp but the animals didn't seem to notice and neither did Johnny and Nicky. The hippopotamus exhibit was a huge hit. The sheer size of these animals is amazing. We had several good looks at their teeth. We went to the once highly touted polar bear exhibit but things seem to have quieted down considerably since Knut was born. The next point of interest was the wolf exhibit. Nicky ran past the enclosure and one of the wolves took off running alongside him. The wolf 's wagging tail suggested play but I was glad to have a thick sheet of plexiglass separating them. After playing with the wolf we moved on to the playground where the boys got a chance to run, climb, jump, and spin. We finally got a chance to see a giraffe. It seems that every zoo we have been to as had either no giraffe exhibit or a temporarily closed giraffe exhibit. After all of the waiting, the boys lasted less than 3 minutes before heading to the ape house. Johnny and Nicky were very entertained by the climbing and swinging. I don't think they made the connection to their own behavior less than 30 minutes prior. We stopped in at the aquarium before heading into the big cat house. We were there just at feeding time so we got quite a show of animal posturing and big cats making all sorts of menacing sounds. After we left the zoo we headed to the Brandenburg gate for a night time view. We were not disappointed. The gate looked majestic under the lights. we headed back to our apartment and prepared a dinner that included bulettes - a Berlin specialty - kind of like a patty shaped meatloaf. Berliners eat them cold with mustard or heated with a starch on the side. We liked them best with curry sauce.
